The
Challenge

The album Morning/Evening by Four Tet is the story of a journey told through vocal harmonies and deep melodies which blend and complete during the two sides of vinyl. The first one, “Morning Side” brings us with the mind in India, the atmosphere is lively. “Evening Side” is a musical immersion somewhat cold. Two sides of the same medal that complete each other.

Brainstorming
I've created a visual moodboard to visualise the two sides of the vynil. After this step, I started to illustrate a few different proposals.
Illustrating
While illustrating is not my main activity, I enjoyed to think about this draw as an experiement and I tried my best to bring creativity to the final result.
Mockups
After completing the illustration on paper, I digitalised on computer with Adobe Illustrator, and I create the mockups of the vynils with Adobe Photoshop.

Moodboard

The moodboard development for Four Tet’s “Morning/Evening” album began with a conceptual exploration of duality and transformation. The creative process involved establishing visual metaphors that could capture the album’s journey from the vibrant “Morning Side” to the contemplative “Evening Side.” The moodboard features a striking orange sculptural form adorned with organic patterns reminiscent of seeds or cellular structures, symbolizing growth and the fertile energy of morning. This warm, terracotta-colored vessel represents the lively Indian-influenced atmosphere described in the morning tracks. On the contrasting side, the deep black background hosts a solitary lionfish, its delicate fins and spines creating an ethereal presence that embodies the cold, immersive quality of the evening side. The fish floats in darkness like a meditation on solitude and introspection, perfectly capturing the album’s transition from external vibrancy to internal contemplation.

Artwork creation and concept

The final artwork synthesizes the moodboard’s dual nature into a cohesive visual narrative that mirrors Four Tet’s musical storytelling. The illustration presents a blue-skinned figure in profile, whose opened cranium reveals concentric circles in alternating blue and red - a visual representation of the mind’s journey between the two album sides. The swirling element above the head suggests the transcendent quality of the vocal harmonies, while the figure’s serene expression embodies the meditative state achieved through the deep melodies. The stark contrast between the figure’s cool blue tone and the warm red accents within the mind cavity reflects the album’s fundamental duality - the external calm of evening consciousness containing the passionate warmth of morning memories. The flowing black and white creates movement and continuity, suggesting how the two sides of the vinyl flow into each other, completing the metaphorical medal that represents the full listening experience. This artwork successfully translates the album’s sonic journey into a visual meditation on consciousness, time, and the cyclical nature of human experience.
